Can comfort become like a ghost?

Letters of Change

A weekly space for happiness, self-trust & the art of living well

Hello and welcome, Reader!

Have you ever noticed how comfort can turn into a ghost?

It lingers quietly in the background, whispering, “Don’t change anything yet. Stay a bit longer.”

That’s what one of my coaching colleagues recently called the ghost of comfort.
We were talking about clients who say they’re ready to move on — from a job, a city, even an identity — yet something invisible holds them in place.

And she laughed softly and said,

“I think it’s the ghost of comfort again, haunting the brave.”

It’s not fear. Fear screams. Comfort whispers.
It convinces us that “things are fine,” even when we wake up knowing they’re not.
It promises safety, even when it quietly drains our energy.

When comfort keeps us small

In my conversations lately — with coaches, professionals, and friends — I see the same pattern.
People standing at the threshold of something new, but still circling in the old.
They don’t feel bad. They just don’t feel alive.

One of my clients said:

“It’s not that I don’t like my work. I just don’t recognize myself in it anymore.”

That’s the ghost again — offering the illusion of stability while the deeper self quietly fades.

💡 How to invite change back in

There’s no need to fight the ghost.
You can simply acknowledge it, thank it for protecting you, and then start moving gently toward what feels true now.

Change rarely begins with courage. It begins with noticing.
A moment of honesty: “I don’t want to keep living this way.”
A moment of curiosity: “What would feel more like me?”

And then, a small step.
The first act of aliveness is often as simple as saying yes to your own attention.

💭 Two gentle prompts

What part of your current comfort feels slightly too tight, like an old coat that doesn’t quite fit anymore?
What tiny experiment could you make this week to test what’s possible beyond it?

🫶 Help someone start their own chapter

If you know someone who’s been circling around the same decision, share this letter with them.
Sometimes, naming the ghost is the first step to letting it go.

Warmly,

Elena

This week is very special for me. It’s my birthday week, a moment that always nudges me to pause, look around, and whisper, “So… what have we learned this time?” And while many people share lists of lessons equal to their age, I decided that’s far too long for both of us. I don’t have 58 wise revelations, and...
