Letters of Change

A weekly space for happiness, self-trust & the art of living well

Hello and welcome, Reader!

Over the past weeks, I’ve been sharing an exciting story of a career transition.

From the moment something ends unexpectedly,
through searching, clarity,
and the resistance that often follows.

There is one more part that matters just as much.

What happens next.

When the New Path Begins

For my client, this stage didn’t look like a breakthrough.

It looked like learning how to move in a completely new environment.

He began with targeted courses to build the core skills he would need as a data analyst. Not everything at once, but enough to take the next step with confidence.

Soon after, he started working on pro bono projects. These weren’t about income or visibility. What mattered was something else entirely: the experience of applying his skills in real situations, seeing that he could be useful, and beginning to enjoy the work itself. That feeling — “this could be mine” — became an important source of motivation.

At the same time, he was shaping how to present himself differently.

His résumé became a bridge between two worlds: years of analytical experience in banking and the new technical skills he was developing. It helped him see that he wasn’t starting from zero — he was repositioning what he already had.

Think Big, Start Small

There was still a larger vision behind these steps.

He wanted to work with innovative solutions, contribute to something meaningful, and see the real impact of his work on people.

But the way forward didn’t come through one decisive move.

It unfolded through specific, often modest actions.

  • A conversation with someone already working in the field helped him understand how his background could be relevant.
  • A small project gave him confidence that he could handle real tasks.
  • A new connection opened a perspective he hadn’t considered before.

Over time, these steps led to his first role as a data analyst in a company working with ERP systems.

It was an entry-level position, but it offered something essential: a real environment to grow in.

What also mattered was the context around it.

The role was well-paid even at that level, and it allowed him to work mostly from home. This gave him something he hadn’t had before — time and flexibility. He could continue learning, explore new ideas, and develop side projects without constant pressure.

Staying Grounded

This phase required practical adjustments as well.

At home, the family chose a simpler way of living. They sold their car and rented out their country house, creating additional financial stability.

These decisions were not dramatic, but they made it possible to stay focused on the transition without constant stress.

Professionally, he continued to build step by step.

He found a mentor who helped him better understand the industry and make more informed choices. He expanded his network, learned how to communicate his value, and faced a number of rejections along the way.

Each of these experiences required him to adapt, refine his approach, and continue moving forward.

Gradually, the effort began to take shape in a more stable way.

He moved into a role with a leading telecom company, where his work provided both financial security and flexibility. At the same time, he continued to explore projects that felt meaningful to him, including developing a chatbot designed to help people reflect on their daily experiences and improve different areas of their lives.

As he once said:

In the bank, I was focused on money and status.
Now, the most important thing for me is working independently
and being engaged in meaningful projects that can change people’s lives.

Building the Path Over Time

In many career transitions, this is the part that remains less visible.

We tend to focus on outcomes, while the process itself is built through many small, consistent decisions and actions.

  • Courses that build a foundation.
  • Projects that bring real experience.
  • Conversations that expand perspective.
  • Adjustments that create stability.
  • Persistence that keeps everything moving.

Not in a perfect or linear way.

But in a way that gradually becomes sustainable.

I wrote more about this stage in The Midlife Career Pivot, where change becomes something you live, not just think about.

You might recognize this moment in your own way.

When you already know where you want to go,
and the question becomes more practical:

What is the next small step you can take?

With warmth,

Elena

There is a version of “stuck” we don’t talk about enough. It doesn’t look like confusion or a lack of ideas. It looks like this: You know something has to change.
