Letters of Change

A weekly space for happiness, self-trust & the art of living well

Hello and welcome, Reader!

There is a moment in many careers that doesn’t announce itself.

Nothing breaks. Nothing forces a decision.

Yet, internally, something has already come to an end.

You know it.

And still, you continue as if the question is open.

Two Different Paths, Same Turning Point

Recently, I worked with two clients who had both reached that point.

Both were ready to leave their current roles and begin looking for what comes next.

Their situations appeared similar, but their choices were very different.

The first is a Head of Sales.

He received not one, but two interview invitations. One of them was unusually strong. The company owner was willing to stretch beyond what they could realistically afford, just to bring him in.

For many, this would be an obvious yes.

But when we looked at it more closely, nothing in the role actually moved him forward.

Not financially in a meaningful way.
Not in terms of responsibility.
Not in terms of personal or professional growth.

It was the same level, the same type of challenges, just in a slightly different environment.

And still, he hesitated.

How do you decline something that others would be grateful to receive?
What if this is the last real opportunity?
What if nothing better comes?

At some point, the question became very simple:

Am I ready to accept something that doesn’t resonate, just because I’m afraid there may be nothing else?

The second is a Marketing Director.

She made her decision in the opposite order.

She chose to leave first, and only then to start looking.

It wasn’t an easy exit. She stayed for two more months to ensure a smooth handover, taking on responsibility even though she knew it was done.

By the end, she was exhausted.

And then new opportunities started to come in.

One of them felt uncertain, but familiar.

Another was more revealing. The company had never had a Marketing Director before. Their processes were chaotic, and they seemed comfortable keeping them that way.

At the same time, they asked her to prepare a detailed marketing plan as a “test task.”

Her question was not only whether to accept.

It was how to say no.

We spoke about her values. About the kind of environment she wanted to step into. About the difference between proving herself and giving away her work.

In the end, her clarity allowed her to articulate her thoughts with ease. She did not respond as a candidate trying to pass a test, but rather as a professional open to engaging on the right terms.

The Space in Between Decisions

What connects these two stories is not the offers themselves.

It’s the space in between.

Both of them knew their previous chapter was over.

And yet, each of them found themselves pulled back into hesitation.

Because saying no can feel riskier than saying yes.

We imagine missed chances. We imagine doors closing.

But there is another dynamic at play.

As long as we remain available to what we have already outgrown, we keep recreating variations of the same situation.

Not intentionally. Just because we haven’t drawn a clear line.

Closing the Chapter Fully

Clarity is not only about choosing the next step.

It is also about closing the current one.

Fully.

If you're going to leave, then leave.

Don't do it dramatically, but also don't leave parts of yourself behind in the negotiation process.

Because partial decisions tend to repeat themselves.

In many midlife transitions, this becomes the real turning point.

Not finding something new immediately, but being willing to stand in the space where the old no longer fits.

Without rushing to fill it.

I wrote more about this phase of transition in The Midlife Career Pivot, especially about the stage where clarity comes before direction.

A Question For You

You might recognize this moment in your own way.

  • Where are you still holding on, even though you already know the truth?
  • What would a clean ending make possible for you?

With warmth,

Elena
